Eliza Johnson never really served as First Lady because she had TB. She did do some White House functions, but her daughter Mary stepped in and did most of them. Eliza taught her husband to read and write because he didn’t know how to, since he had no formal education. She died six months after him because of the TB. Her chair she had was made for people like her that were sick with TB. It looks like a Lazy Boy of today but from the 1800's.
